Nikhil Mahalanodis

I am Nikhil Mahalanobis, and I am a rising junior currently attending the University of Central Florida, with a major in Computer Science. This summer I am working with Dr. Gregory Welch and Dr. Gerd Bruder on our project “IoT and augmented reality: agents with pervasive awareness, appearance, and abilities.” The scope of this project is to analyze, using IoT devices, how humans interact with and respond to different virtual agent interaction, via Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technology. Hopefully this research will help to expand the world of being immersed in a virtual reality, and normally interacting with different virtual AI agents

Kelly Fullin

My name is Kelly Fullin and I am a senior at Ashland University located in Ashland, Ohio. I will be completing a double major in Mathematics and Computer Science this coming fall. This summer I am working alongside Nafisa Mostofa under Dr. Turgut and Dr. Bölöni on a project titled “IoT-enabled smart mobility devices for aging and rehabilitation.” We plan to adapt last year’s walker for the visually impaired to improve its functioning in sunlit environments.

Gregory Fichthorn

I am Gregory Fichthorn, an upcoming senior from Stetson University in DeLand. I am currently majoring in Computer Science and Mathematics. This summer I am working on the project “IoT augmented physical scale model of a suburban home”. The goal of the project is to create a model ‘ScaledHome’ which we will use to gather and evaluate data that will allow homes to regulate temperature in a more environmentally friendly way than AC, such as automatically opening doors and windows.

Eric Elliott

Hi! My name is Eric Elliott and I’m a rising junior at Brown University concentrating in computer science. This summer, I’m working with Dr. Qun Zhou and Dr. Damla Turgut on research involving IoT-enabled peer-to-peer energy trading. In this research, we’re investigating the application of P2P economy models on the energy market, and hope to design optimal trading strategies for market agents.

Alexis Downing

Hello there. I am Alexis De’Andre Downing, a junior at Florida Polytechnic University, located in Lakeland, Florida. I am pursuing B.S in Computer Engineering and my concentration in machine intelligence. I am working on processing data from fluid structures/ interactions with machine learning. I will be working with Dr. Turgut and Dr. Dickerson as my faculty mentors. Also, I have my two graduate mentors and my lab partner. The main goal is to find the maximum deflection of the fiber and how different elements based from the bending energy formula affects it. A machine learning algorithm will be created and provided with training and testing data. If you have any questions, you can email me at adowning3566@floridapoly.edu

Thomas Burns

I am a rising senior majoring in computer science and minoring in math at Rutgers University in New Jersey. This summer I am working with my partner Greg Fichthorn as well as Dr. Damla Turgut and Dr. Lotzi Bölöni performing research on a scaled smart home. We will be constructing our own model of a house which we will then simulate an environment and collect data using sensors with a Raspberry Pi 3. Our goal is to develop AI models through deep learning on the simulated data we collect to provide temperature maintenance through alternative methods than A/C.

Stefanie Mutter

I am a rising junior currently attending Muhlenberg College where I am a computer science major and statistics minor. My research this summer with Dr. Greg Welch and Dr. Gerd Bruder involves comparing different conditions of a virtual “assistant” that can perform actions similar to Amazon’s Alexa. We will investigate participants’ perception of of the virtual assistant, i.e. the sense of social presence, confidence, etc. You can contact me at stefaniemutter@muhlenberg.edu.

Joseph Tobon

I am a Senior undergraduate student at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, New Jersey. I have an associate’s degree in Computer Science and am currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology with a specialization in Game Development. This summer, I am working under Dr. Mingjie Lin on the Energy-Efficient Computing Devices in IoT project. Specifically, we are implementing various IoT related projects using an FPGA, Verilog, and Vivado.

Christopher Feltner

I am a rising junior at the University of Central Florida Burnett Honors College, where I study Computer Science with minors in Intelligent Robotic Systems and International Engineering. This summer, I am working under Dr. Turgut and Dr. Bölöni on a joint project with the UCF College of Medicine. We are investigating how a four-legged walker might be made safer and more effective using Internet of Things. Specifically, we are employing computer vision techniques using images from a Kinect camera to recognize obstacles which a blind walker user might encounter and warning them of these obstacles using haptic feedback.

Mary Broyhill

I am Mary Broyhill, a rising senior electrical engineering student at University of North Carolina at Charlotte located in Charlotte, North Carolina. I am working under Dr. Cho and my goal is to gain research experience in the design and fabrication of sensors. The goal of this research project is to design a user friendly, low-cost, low-power sensor that is able to detect the concentration of lead in a solution in the ppm range.
