My name is Laura Figueroa, I am a rising senior graduating with a Bachelor’s in Computer Science in Fall 2021 from Florida International University. Through this program, I am working with Dr. Turgut, Dr. Bölöni, and my partner Myat Win on an IoT-enabled smart mobility device for aging and rehabilitation that will help blind and mobility-impaired users navigate around obstacles. Specifically, we will use Google’s EfficientDet, a scalable and efficient object detector with state-of-the-art accuracy, paired with our own distance estimation model to inform the walker user of incoming obstacles in their path.
